In a stunning upset to open the World Polo League's third tournament of its inaugural season, Alegria (Freddie Mannix, 8, Jesse Bray, 6, Gringo Colombres, 6, Juan Martin Obregon, 5) knocked off Founders Cup champion Grand Champions (Grant Ganzi, 3, Juancito Bollini, 4, Rodrigo Andrade, 9, Juan Martin Nero, 10), 12-10, on a brisk and windy Wednesday at Jan Pamela Field.

SD Farms (Sayyu Dantata, 2, Santi Torres, 6, Guillermo Terrera, 8, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10) looked impressive in its debut with a 16-11 victory over Black Watch (Juan Cruz Merlos, 6, Nacho Figueras, 6, Pite Merlos, 8, Tommy Biddle, 5) at Valiente Polo Farm.

The nation's largest and innovative polo club has assembled top players, sponsors and horses for a good cause and morning of fun polo that begins at 10 a.m.

Nacho Figueras, the sport's ambassador, heads the star-studded event that raises money for the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club of Wellington.

World Polo League Palm Beach Open Begins Wednesday With Doubleheader, SD Farms Makes Debut

WELLINGTON, Fla., March 4, 2019---After two exciting overtime finishes in the first two tournament finals of the World Polo League's inaugural season, what will the storyline be for the Palm Beach Open that begins on Wednesday?

The World Polo League season continues with Opening Day of the Palm Beach Open featuring SD Farms making its debut in what promises to be another highly competitive tournament.

SD Farms, with team sponsor Sayyu Dantata and teammates Adolfo Cambiaso, Guillermo Terrera and Santi Torres, three of the WPL's hottest players, will make its WPL debut against Black Watch at 4 p.m. at Valiente Polo Farm Field 3.  

In the opening game at 11 a.m., Alegria plays Founders Cup champion Grand Champions at Jan Pamela Field 3.

Grand Champions Upsets Valiente In Overtime Thriller To Capture Founders Cup; Juan Martin Nero Tournament MVP; Rodrigo Andrade Tato's Game MVP

WELLINGTON, Fl., March 4, 2019---In one of polo's biggest upsets, Grand Champions knocked off Valiente, 12-11, in overtime to win the World Polo League Founders Cup Sunday at Valiente Polo Farm.

In front of an overflow crowd, Argentine 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero scored the winning goal in the first two minutes of overtime to upset previously unbeaten Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, 2, Agustin Nero, 6, Santi Torres, 6, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10). 

Playing together for the first time in the WPL's second tournament of the season, Grand Champions finished the eight-team, 26-goal tournament undefeated at 4-0. 

Nero and teammates Rodrigo Andrade, 9, Grant Ganzi, 3, and Juancito Bollini, 4, earned $60,000 in prize money.

After winning three 20-goal tournaments in January and February, Dutta Corp (Timmy Dutta, 2, Nico Diaz Alberdi, 1, Lucas Diaz Alberdi, 5, Tim Dutta, 0) defeated Patagones (Anita Avendano, 0, Joaquin Avendano, Santi Wulff, 5, Gonzalo Avendano, 1), 11-9, to win the Grand Champions Top Pony 8-Goal League title for the first time in the team's history.

Timmy Dutta, 17, was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 10 goals for the second time in his young career. He also scored 10 goals in the Polo Gear Challenge Cup beating Nic Roldan's single game scoring record.

In one of the best games in the young history of the World Polo League, Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, 2, Agustin Nero, 6, Santi Torres, 6, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10) defeated Colorado (Rob Jornayvaz, 2, Juan Martin Zubia, 7, Diego Cavanagh, 9, Jero del Carill, 7), 10-7, in the semifinals Friday in front of a packed house at Grand Champions Polo Club.

Valiente, overtime winners of the season-opening All-Star Challenge Draw Tournament with Nero, Torres, Pablo MacDonough and Poroto Cambiaso, will try to make it two in a row when they face Grand Champions in the final at 4 p.m. Both teams are undefeated at 3-0.

The subsidiary Powerhorse Cup featuring Scone and Colorado is 1 p.m. also at Valiente.
