WELLINGTON, FL—April 20, 2016----Some of the sport’s top up-and-coming players ages 25-and-under will compete in the 12th annual Jimmer Newman Memorial Cup-PTF Junior Championship Thursday at 4 p.m. at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
Three teams will compete in the round-robin. The teams are:
Casa Dio: Tiernen Tognini, Santos Bollini, Tenzin Tognini, Juan Martin Obregon.
Pony Express: Benji Daniels, Justin Daniels, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini.
Team USPA: Lucas Escobar, Jack McLean, Cody Ellis, Wes Finlayson.
Ganzi and Bollini are coming off winning the 22-Goal Hall of Fame Cup Monday at Isla Carroll West. Aspen Valley Polo Club defeated Grand Champions Polo Club, 10-8, and Ganzi was named MVP.
In last year’s Jimmer Newman Memorial Cup, Plaid Horse (Jack McLean, Christian Weisz, Joaquin Panelo, Trevor Niznik) won with a 6-5 overtime decision over Pony Express (Benji Daniels, Justin Daniels, Matias Gonzalez, Matt Cohen).
Cohen, a top junior player, passed away in May, 2015 at age 15 of complications from his lifelong battle with diabetes.
The three teams are playing in honor of Jimmer Newman, who died on October 8, 2004 in Santa Barbara, Calif. where he was assistant polo manager. He was an up-and-coming 2-goal, 24-year-old player and son of IPC polo manager Jimmy Newman.
The Polo Training Foundation has been instrumental in the growth of junior and youth polo players by encouraging the sport’s development with training programs, lessons and tournaments for boys and girls. The international exchange programs have been among the most popular.
