Basalt Handicap, NYTS, Kidz Polo Head Busy Week At Aspen Valley Polo Club

The Basalt Handicap, featuring five teams, and USPA National Youth Tournament Series qualifier highlights another busy week at Aspen Valley Polo Club.

The two-day medium goal tournament beginsFriday with a doubleheader. A round-robin at 11 a.m. MST at Sopris Field opens the action followed by a six-chukker game at High Mesa Field.

On Sunday, the subsidiary is 11 a.m. followed by the final at 1 p.m. at Aspen Valley Polo Club which will also host a daylong WindWalkers Fundraiser.

The fundraiser will benefit WindWalkers Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy Center. Founded in 2005, the non-profit’s mission is to provide a variety of equine-assisted therapies to aid in the development and growth of those with challenges including physical, neurological, emotional, behavioral or psychological.

Tiburon Wins Thriller To Capture ChukkerTV Challenge Cup; Lucas Lalor Named MVP

Tiburon, making its Aspen Valley Polo Club debut this summer, rallied in the sixth inning for an exciting 10-9 victory over Casablanca on Sunday to capture the ChukkerTV Challenge Cup.

Early first-half leaders Tiburon (Lauren Sherry, Collen Clark, Pablo Dorignac, Lucas Lalor) trailed Casablanca (Marc Ganzi, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Mariano Gracida) by as many as four goals in the fourth chukker.

The Dallas-based team outscored Casablanca, 3-0, in the final chukker with goals from Clark, Lalor and game-winner from Dorignac in the final seconds of the game.

Polo To Be Showcased At Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games

The future just got a little brighter for polo and its next generation of players.

Polo has been confirmed as a showcase sport for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games, scheduled Oct. 6-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The fourth International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission, after a recent visit to the Argentine capital, approved both polo and squash to be added to the sports program.

The “Sports Lab” concept was launched at the 2014 Nanjing Games where roller sports, skateboarding, sport climbing and wushu were featured. Since then, skateboarding and sport climbing have been added to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

La Karina captured the Independence Cup with an exciting 9-7 victory over Aspen Valley Polo Club on Sunday in the club’s summer polo season-opener.

Aside from Aspen Valley Polo Club (Collen Clark, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Lucas Lalor) tying the game at 3-3 midway through the third chukker, La Karina (Carlitos Gracida, Mariano Gracida, Brian Boyd, Marc Ganzi) led for most of the game.

Boyd, coming off a serious wrist injury suffered last summer, was named Most Valuable Player after dominating the game and scoring five goals.

Flexjet Wins First World Snow Polo Championship Title; Jesse Bray Named MVP

Flexjet knocked off defending champion U.S. Polo Assn. to capture the World Snow Polo Championship for the first time Sunday at Rio Grande Park.

In front of an overflow crowd including a sold out VIP tent and worldwide ChukkerTV audience, Flexjet, led by two first-time snow polo players, defeated U.S. Polo Assn., 7-4, to win the coveted trophy.

Flexjet avenged last year’s 10-5 finals loss bydominating the four-chukker game with Melissa Ganzi and first-timers Jason Crowder and Jesse Bray. It was also the first time the California players and long time friends competed on the same team.

U.S. POLO ASSN. WILL DEFEND TITLE AGAINST FLEXJET SUNDAY IN WORLD SNOW POLO CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL 

Defending champion U.S. Polo Assn., making its third finals appearance in four years, will meet Flexjet Sunday in the World Snow Polo Championship at Rio Grande Park.

The game will be televised by ChukkerTV at 1 p.m. MST (3 p.m. EST) to a worldwide audience. The consolation game featuring Audi and St. Regis will follow at 2:30 p.m.

An overnight snow storm dumped two additional feet of snow in the arena forcing tournament officials to change the opening qualifying format from two full games to two shootouts.

Officials met with players on Saturday and decided for the safety of the horses and players a shootout featuring one player from each team would determine the finalists.
