Defending Champion Aspen Valley Polo Club Heads Field For Polo America Beach Polo Cup That Begins Friday

SAN DIEGO, Calif., August 31 2017---The iconic Hotel del Coronado and Pacific Ocean will serve as breathtaking backdrops when Aspen Valley Polo Club tries to defend its title in the second annual Polo America Beach Polo Cup that begins Friday.

Some of the best players in the world, including Hall of Famer and former 10-goaler Mike Azzaro, and Argentine 8-goal rated brothers Alejandro and Nacho Novillo Astrada, will compete in a beautiful setting on the hotel’s private white sandy beach.

Aspen Valley Polo Club will be represented by Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini and Pablo Dorignac. Three other teams, San Diego Porsche, Westime and U.S. Polo Assn. will challenge for the title.

Westime (15): Melissa Ganzi, 1, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 8, Lucas Lalor, 6.

U.S. Polo Assn. (14): Marc Ganzi, 2, Nacho Novillo Astrada, 8, Carlitos Gracida, 4.

Four games are scheduled over the three-day weekend. On Friday, Porsche San Diego plays U.S. Polo Assn. at 5:45 p.m.On Saturday, Westime takes on defending champion Aspen Valley Polo Club at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the third and fourth place teams play at noon followed by the championship final at 2 p.m.

In last year’s event, the team of Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini and Tincho Merlos led Aspen Valley Polo Club to a 10-7 victory over Flexjet (Melissa Ganzi, Lucas Lalor, Julio Novillo Astrada). Merlos was named MVP.

It was the first time in beach polo history a major beach polo tournament was held on the west coast at the iconic hotel, the second largest wooden structure in the U.S.

In addition to the polo matches, the Labor Day weekend event will feature a lavish multi-terraced VIP tent, fine dining, parties, increased fan seating from 1,500 to 3,000 and Porsche Million Dollar Road Rally.

The event begins Friday night when the 10,000 square foot VIP Tent is turned into a giant cocktail lounge to watch the first polo game. The front row of the tent is designated as Millionaire’s Row. Twelve luxurious boxes feature white leather furniture with seating for ten.

There will be a Friday night fashion contest in the VIP Tent for Men. Attire is white tuxedo/dinner jacket, black tie and colorful surfer shorts. Prizes will be awarded for Best Dressed Man, Best Dressed Woman and Best Dressed Couple.

On Saturday and Sunday guests can choose between a box in Millionaires Row, a Gold VIP table or a combination of both. The Gold VIP seating is on the front row of the second terrace in the VIP Tent. Attendees are treated to a formal three-course luncheon and wine provided by Hotel del Coronado. Grayse will have informal modeling during lunch each day. Millionaire’s Row Box catering menus will offer guests a wide array of food to choose from. Polo lessons will also be offered throughout the three-day event.

The Hotel del Coronado has been San Diego’s legendary oceanfront beach resort for more than 128 years. Coronado Beach was recently ranked as the eighth best beach in the nation. Coronado has a long history with polo dating back to the early 1900s when John D. Spreckels first introduced polo to Coronado in 1909 with the Spreckels Cup Polo Challenge that is now played at San Diego Polo Club.
