Aspen Valley Polo Club Closes Out Successful Summer Season With This Weekend’s Carbondale Classic

CARBONDALE, Colo., August 24, 2017---Aspen Valley Polo Club's summer polo season comes to a successful end this week with the Carbondale Classic.

Five teams will compete in the two-day tournament.

Action begins Friday at 11 a.m. MST, Flexjet plays Casablanca in a regulation six-chukker game at Sopris Field. At 5 p.m. at High Mesa, a round-robin between Tonkawa, Travieso and Los Amigos will be played.

The subsidiary (11 a.m.) and final (1 p.m.) areSunday at Aspen Valley Polo Club.

Team rosters are:

Casablanca: Marc Ganzi, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Stewart Armstrong.

Flexjet: Melissa Ganzi, Michael Calle, Mariano Gracida, Juan Bollini.

Los Amigos: Paul Foster, Alejandra Foster, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Lucas Lalor.

Tonkawa: Jeff Hildebrand, Brian Boyd, Jimmy Seward, Nacho Novillo Astrada.

Travieso: Teo Calle, Tony Calle, Mike Azzaro, Carlitos Gracida.

Juancito Bollini, 21, and Grant Ganzi, 19, will be going after their sixth tournament victory as teammates.

After playing in the Aloha Cup, where he was MVP, and Eclipse Challenge, Michael Calle, at 15, will make his medium goal debut at Aspen Valley Polo Club.

In last year’s Carbondale Classic, Flexjet (Melissa Ganzi/Jeff Wood, Julio Novillo Astrada, Juan Bollini, Erica Gandomcar-Sachs) won the season finale with wins over Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Tincho Merlos, Jimmy Seward, Michael Payne) and NOH Foods of Hawaii (Ray Noh, Carlitos Gracida, Lucas Lalor, Stewart Armstrong). Bollini was named Most Valuable Player and Stewart Armstrong was selected the MVP for the season.

The second annual Carbondale Classic is named after the town of Carbondale, where Aspen Valley Polo Club is located. The picturesque town is located 170 miles west of Denver and 14 miles from Aspen in the heart of Colorado’s breathtaking central Rocky Mountains, resting in the shadow of the 12,953-foot Mount Sopris.

This season’s first nine tournament winners were La Karina (Carlitos Gracida, Mariano Gracida, Brian Boyd, Marc Ganzi), Independence Cup; Tiburon (Collen Clark, Lauren Sherry, Pablo Dorignac, Lucas Lalor), ChukkerTV Challenge Cup; Casablanca (MVPs Mariano Gracida, Grant Ganzi, Pablo Dorignac, Juancito Bollini), Basalt Handicap; Casablanca (Santos Bollini, Grant Ganzi, Lucas Lalor, Juancito Bollini), Craig Sakin Memorial; La Karina (Brian Boyd, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Mike Azzaro), Emma Challenge; Flexjet (Melissa Ganzi, Juan Bollini, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, United States Arena Handicap; Aspen Valley Polo Club (Alejandro Poma, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Lucas Lalor), High Alpine Cup; Travieso (Teo Calle, Tony Calle, Nacho Novillo Astrada, Marc Ganzi), Mount Sopris Cup; and Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Tony Calle, Juancito Bollini, Stewart Armstrong, Rocky Mountain Open.

Aspen Valley Polo Club, the nation’s fastest growing USPA polo club, has enjoyed its most successful summer season in club history. The club, which recently broke ground for two more fields, is enjoying increased membership, continues to grow and introduce polo throughout the valley.

The club attracts some of the world’s top pro and amateur players. In the last four years Aspen Valley Polo Club has had a positive impact in the area hosting kids polo camps, teaching lessons and hosting several charitable events at the club that have benefitted local charities including the Aspen Valley Hospital Foundation.

Polo has increased in popularity in Aspen and surrounding areas with the club’s offerings of various weekly tournaments, Gladiator Tuesdays and Asado, Kids Polo, indoor and outdoor arena polo, charitable events and The Polo School. Practice sessions are also held for teams competing in the weekend tournaments.
